The Alicante-Elche Airport, popularly known as El Altet Airport, is located 9 kilometers southwest of the capital, in the municipality of Elche. Nearly 80% of the traffic consists of international flights, mainly from the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands, highlighting the importance of tourism in the region. It is the fifth busiest airport in Spain in terms of passenger numbers (over 12.3 million in 2016) and one of the 50 busiest airports in Europe. Before the construction of this airport, Alicante used the Rabasa airbase, built during the Civil War but used intermittently for commercial aviation after the war. Soon, the base became insufficient to handle all air traffic, and in 1967, the airport we know today was inaugurated. By 1971, just four years later, the maximum passenger capacity had been exceeded, leading to the opening of a new terminal in 1972. The number of passengers continued to increase, necessitating renovations in 1978 and 1996, the latter year seeing the construction of a new control tower. Terminal 2 became operational in 2007, and in 2009 and 2010, new entrances to the airport were built.

In 2011, a new terminal was inaugurated with a capacity of 20 million passengers per year, which multiplied the area of the old T1 and T2 terminals by six, rendering them out of service. In 2013, the airport, formerly known officially as Alicante Airport, was renamed Alicante-Elche Airport.
